OUR CORE VALUES
Our products, services, and messaging shall cause no harm to the consumer, to non-human animals, or to the earth.
We seek to be honest, transparent and authentic in all that we offer.
REVERENCE FOR NATURE
We have the highest regard for the natural world of which we are a part. We celebrate the magic and mystery of life.
We consider wellness to include body, mind, and spirit.
We will maintain a light-hearted, “go with the flow” attitude towards life, allowing everything to be as it is, and placing more importance on life's journey rather than the destination.
Meet Our Aromatherapist & Founder, Jessica Lohrey
I was brought up in southern Ohio in a little log cabin in the woods. I received an academic education at school, and a practical life skills education at home. I learned about organic gardening, herbs, essential oils, being self-sufficient, and using nature as medicine for the body, mind and soul.
Although I saw the value and beauty in our lifestyle, I always felt like I was missing out on the perks of modern living. I graduated high school early to attend college, and move to the "big city." After college, I found much to explore, and was quickly immersed in a busy new life full of work, wonder, and adventure.
I moved from city to city, coast to coast for the next 30 years, as I explored the world of corporate America. No matter where I lived, I always found places to hike and be alone outdoors. My relationship with nature kept me grounded, sane, and healthy.
In 2007, I was working in Fort Lauderdale, FL for a large corporation in the natural products industry with a side hustle as a yoga teacher. At the time, I was in a marriage that had been weakened by lack of communication, miscarriages, differing work schedules, and my growing obsession with yoga. I was either busy or exhausted, and for the first time in my life, I could find no sufficient place to recharge and reconnect with nature.
I noticed that the acceptable pace of life keeps people disconnected not only from diverse activities, social interaction and healthy food, but also from themselves, emotional well-being and often physical well-being. I felt weak, tired, sad, and hopeless.
Since my teenage years when I worked for my mother’s herb business, I had kept a stash of essential oils in a shoebox. One day, in desperation, I pulled out every essential oil in the box that came from a tree. I mixed them all together and it was AMAZING! I carried that bottle with me everywhere I went, inhaling as needed. I began to share it in my yoga classes, and soon yoga studios began to sell it. Tree of India Aromatherapy was launched!
Within a short time, I opened the first Tree of India shop in a tiny space that I rented for $500/month next to my friend’s yoga studio. In almost no time, I outgrew the space! Over the next 10 years, Tree of India continued to evolve through farmers' markets, wholesale accounts, private labeling, a webstore and 3 different retail locations. My fast-paced life did not slow down. If anything, it had become more frantic, more busy and more stressful now that I was a recently divorced female entrepreneur with big passions and few resources.
I reached another “breaking point” and in 2016, I left Florida and headed to the mountains of North Carolina. I spent the next 3 years redefining the relationships between Tree of India, Nature, Yoga and my personal wellbeing. I dove deeper into my practice, spent countless hours in the forests, and took a pilgrimage to India. I began to connect the dots among all the things I love so dearly in this life. I realized that Tree of India is about slowing down to Nature’s pace. It is about surrendering into the flow of life: letting go of worry, allowing things to evolve naturally, and accepting every outcome exactly as it is.
I feel strongly about helping to create a more connected world through my work as an aromatherapist and yoga therapist. Today Tree of India is a simpler operation that allows me to share more and serve more. I know the pain and isolation of living in the artificial human-made world. It is damaging and toxic. Nature is our medicine. The study of the self, the study of nature, and the study of life are one and the same.
I offer these beautiful plant-based creations as an invitation for you to connect. If you struggle with the symptoms of a fast-paced life, I invite you to explore our offerings. Settle into a few moments of stillness. Inhale and feel the nature that is already within you. Inhale and feel it as peace. Feel it as acceptance. Feel it as joy in simply being here now.
